Il Real ID è di fatto uno dei maggiori benefici portati dall'aggiornamento della piattaforma Battle.net. Grazie a questo sistema possiamo comunicare con i nostri amici anche se questi sono su un altro server di WoW o se stanno giocando a Starcraft II (e in futuro a Diablo III).
Alcuni ogni tanto si chiedono come mai non esiste nessuna modalità "invisibile", di fatto non è possibile nascondere la propria presenza online come invece si può fare in praticamente tutti gli altri programmi di messaggistica. Bashiok è intervenuto nel forum ufficiale per spiegare i motivi di questa scelta e far notare che una tale opzione renderebbe inutile tutto il sistema dei Real ID.

Il momento in cui è possibile nascondere la propria presenza coincide con l'attimo in cui tutti lo fanno, ed è una brutta situazione apparire come offline e nello stesso tempo osservare segretamente chi invice ha impostato il suo status su online, alla fine anche loro saranno spinti ad usare tale modalità.
Il Real ID dovrebbe essere usato con persone che si conoscono nella vita reale, con amici, familiari, compagni di lavoro, di scuola ecc. e per questo motivo non dovrebbe esserci nessun bisogno di tenere segreto se si è o no davanti al computer.
Inoltre, quando uno dei miei amici Real ID mi chiede di accompagnarlo in un raid e in quel momento non mi va, dico di no. Capisco che alcuni possano non trovare questa situazione adeguata. Allo stesso modo non sono d'accordo nel dare a tutti i miei conoscenti il mio contatto Real ID, in modo analogo a quando non permetto a mia nonna di essermi amica su Facebook (per paura che veda le mie foto alle feste, ecc.).
Detto questo, il sistema del Real ID è in costante evoluzione e non posso al momento escludere che un'opzione per nascondere la propria presenza non sarà mai aggiunta, ma andrebbe comunque contro lo scopo del sistema e potrebbe creare situazioni bizzarre, come quella spiegata all'inizio di questo intervento, che minerebbero alla base la sua utilità. The second you can turn off your presence is the second everyone does it, and then it's a weird situation where you appear offline but you're secretly looking at everyone else who has themselves as online, but then they find out and start offline snooping.
We encourage that Real ID only be used with people you know in real life, friends, family, co-workers, school mates, etc. and for that reason it shouldn't need to be a secret if you're on your computer or not.
Also, when one of my Real ID friends asks me to run a raid or fill in a spot and I don't feel like it, I say no. I realize that may not be a situation that's reasonable for everyone at all times. I also don't agree to be Real ID friends with everyone I know in real life in just the same way I don't agree to allow my Grandma to be friends with me on Facebook (for fear of her seeing pictures of me at parties, etc.).
Anyway, all that said, our Real ID feature set is constantly moving and so I wouldn't hazard to say that things like a 'hidden' option will never exist, but it's fairly opposite to the intent of the system, and like I said before, can create some really bizarre social behavior that undermines the usefulness of it.
