PlanetSide 2025: SOE’s Big Plans For The Future (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/12/01/planetside-2025-soes-big-plans-for-the-future/)

These days, when an MMO maker declares its intention to carry on until the day the sun reveals it’s actually been a giant Pac-Man the entire time and devours us all in one fell wakka, it’s easy to be skeptical. Extremely skeptical. But PlanetSide 2 (http://www.planetside2.com/) seems to be off to an especially strong start, and no one ever got anywhere – except maybe off the edge of a cliff – by being shortsighted. And so, in a blog post outlining his three-year plan (http://john-smedley.livejournal.com/2412.html) for the truly massive MMOFPS, CEO John Smedley explained that “we’re thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025.” Which, as you may have noticed, is a bit more than three years from now. But that comparatively short span is the part SOE’s really focusing on, and by the end of it, Smedley’s hoping for player-owned bases, harvestable resources, seamless oceans between continents, NPC armies, and tons more.

It’s quite a behemoth of a post, but here are some of the standouts:
“We plan on releasing continents that are empty or partially empty where players can build their own bases. These are open world bases, so others will be able to attack them. We’re also planning on having these continents heavily resource based with new resource types that will be very rare, and lots of cool new stuff that can be built out of these new resources. Imagine [StarCraft II] style resource harvesting with physical vehicles doing the mining or the harvesting.”

“Water between continents – seamlessly – this is really hard tech, but our goal is to make the whole planet seamless and allow water based vehicles.”That last bit, especially, sounds completely insane. Meanwhile, Smedley wants to populate these areas – at least, in part – with NPCs that players can both fight and command. “Imagine,” he wrote, “as the commander of a base, sending an NPC army towards another base MOBA-style – except it’s in the middle of the Planetside 2. This isn’t another game mode. It’s all part of the same game.”

Other goals include weather, tons more vehicles and weapons, and eSports support. That said, all of this is subject to change. To its credit, SOE seems to understand quite well that players are the glue that holds its game together, so they’ll get final say. ”This isn’t some ‘vision’ we plan on imparting on our players,” Smedley clarified. “It’s our thoughts on what we think would be cool. We will listen to our users feedback and make changes based on that feedback.”

Another idea is to add NPC enemies and armies to the game. “I don’t want to call this PVE.” says Smedley. “More like a global invasion that goes after everybody. This isn’t a bunch of quest givers saying “go kill 10 rates” - this is bad ass aliens that want to gut you.”

Planetside 2: SOE details its 3-year plan, wants to run until 2025 if possiblePlanetside 2 developers SOE sure are an optimistic bunch aren’t they? Studio president John Smedley has outlined his grand plan for the long future of the MMOFPS, including new continents and much, much more. Check out his theories below.

Over on Smedley’s blog (http://john-smedley.livejournal.com/2412.html), he explained, “We have games that have run for over 13 years, so when we’re making Planetside 2 we aren’t looking at what it’s like in 2012. We’re thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025.
“We have a 3 year plan. That’s really big. We plan on putting that out to the users at some point in the near future. This isn’t some “vision” we plan on imparting on our players. It’s our thoughts on what we think would be cool.
“We will listen to our users feedback and make changes based on that feedback. We think we have some killer ideas but our players have pretty good ones too! I want to be super clear here – these are just some of the ideas. The team has a ton.”
Smedley then listed the team’s ideas:

Player Owned bases – we plan on releasing continents that are empty or partially empty where players can build their own bases. These are open world bases so others will be able to attack them. We’re also planning on having these continents heavily resource based with new resource types that will be very rare..and lots of cool new stuff that can be built out of these new resources.
Harvestable resources – imagine SC II style resource harvesting with physical vehicles doing the mining or the harvesting.
Water between continents – seamlessly – this is really hard tech, but our goal is to make the whole planet seamless and allow water based vehicles.
Lots more vehicles and weapons – just what it sounds like. Many of these will take very rare resources to make.
NPC enemies – I don’t want to call this PVE. That’s not exactly what we have in mind. More like a global invasion that goes after everybody. This isn’t a bunch of quest givers saying “go kill 10 rats” – this is bad ass aliens that want to gut you.
NPC armies – imagine as the commander of a base sending an NPC army towards another base MOBA style except it’s in the middle of the Planetside 2. This isn’t another game mode. It’s all part of the same game.
Esports support – we plan on doing this pretty soon after launch. We plan on making this a big big thing and putting a lot of our resources behind it.
Weather
Mac version (soon after launch).

So it’s no secret that Smedley and SOE are playing a long game with Planetside 2. Have you been playing it? Can it sustain for three more years, let alone the 13 Smedley is aiming for? Let us know below.

Aggiornamenti Roadmap

-Unscheduled - Amerish Battle Flow Improvements
Pulling this out temporarily so the team can focus on getting Hossin ready. We'll re-visit Amerish then.

sapete questo cosa vuol dire?

HOSSIN IN AGOSTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

-Drop-podding is horrible. Get rid of it.
We don't plan on removing drop pods, but a polish pass on them is in progress. The following is what is planned, but of course is subject to change.

1) Drop pod maneuverability reduced so they drop closer to their origin points.

2) Instant action origin points changed such that attacker pods spawn in a doughnut shape around the facility while defender pods spawn near the center.

3) Squad spawn changing to be like redeploy but does the quick-deploy-to-squad behavior that currently works at the warpgate.

4) Squad beacon will go on cooldown when a player becomes squad leader.

Feedback is welcome!

-September - Class Update: Infiltrator
Queue price is right fail sound. Not going to make August. :/

I am Disappoint. One day drones will creepily float through the sky and Stalker cloaked infiltrators will roam the plains, wild and free... but August is not that day.
